One of VFW Post 12002's philanthropic programs is called Operation Santa. This annual activity is the purchase of targeted Christmas gifts for the children of all Georgia-based troops deployed overseas during the winter holidays. This program was started by Christian O. Stevens, a member and past-Commander of the Post, former Army Ranger, community leader, and professional skydiver. Since its inception, this program has touched the lives of over 5,000 children (630 in 2019 alone).
To underwrite the costs of Operation Santa, the members of the Post plan and staff an annual fundraising event called the Freedom Fighters Open. Held each year on the Friday before Veterans Day, this event is centered around a Golf Tournament that regularly attracts 120 or more golfers. The event also includes cars for Holes-in-One on the Par 3s, silent auctions, raffles, static displays of military equipment, and a Guest of Honor from the military community. This year’s event will be on November 5 at the BridgeMill Golf Club in Canton, Georgia.

The net proceeds from the Freedom Fighters Open go to Operation Santa Charities, Inc., an IRS-recognized 501(c)(3) charitable corporation. This charity was started in 2003 by the members of VFW Post 12002 with the intent of using funds raised from private and corporate donors to provide support for Georgia-based troops fighting overseas. Since its creation, the charity has raised nearly $350,000 and has spent that money making certain that those fighting for our freedoms know that we appreciate their sacrifices and are 100% behind them, their families, and their missions.
